London Wheat and MATIF Wheat Markets See Volatile Trading Session

A roller coaster of a day today for global ags, with the trickle-down effect pulling and pushing the London wheat about. Volumes picked up throughout the day, resulting in just over 550 lots passing the exchange for London. Matif wheat also shared the US wheat contract’s day of mixed feelings, with a EUR 6.50 spread on the day’s high and low traded Dec 26 prices.

Black Sea Grain Export Disruptions Weigh on Global Wheat Prices

Wheat prices dropped across the globe as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced in an interview today that there will be a “diplomatic track” with Russia discussing Moscow’s stepped-up attacks in the Black Sea that have curbed Ukraine’s export capabilities. Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine will strengthen its air defences in the region. In Russia, the bulk of shipments via ports in the Azov-Black Sea basin were halted throughout last week due to ongoing attacks on vessels and damage to terminals. Shipment volumes from the country are approaching 2010 lows, and domestic prices are in free fall given the halting of physical flow.

Pro Farmer Crop Tour Raises Questions Over US Corn Harvest Potential

Across the pond, the end of last week saw the results from the Pro Farmer US crop tour, which pointed to lower-than-expected yields in several states, prompting traders to reassess the outlook for this year’s harvest. Pro Farmer estimated a US corn harvest at 15.34 billion bushels, based on a yield of 173.2 bushels per acre. This most recent outlook trailed a forecast from the US Department of Agriculture for around 16 billion bushels.
