Black Sea tensions returned to the fore after news that both Russia and Ukraine traded attacks on shipping overnight, sending wheat markets rallying sharply. Ukraine reportedly struck 11 Russian craft in the Sea of Azov, which amounts to a total of 116 vessels hit since July 6th.
Meanwhile, Russia struck two bulk carriers and a tanker near the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa, killing three, including a ship captain. The Ukrainian Farmer’s Union reports that “Russia has begun systematically striking port infrastructure, terminals and the entire transport logistics chain” which has resulted in Ukraine’s Black Sea ports losing a third of their grain export capacity from 6 to 4mmt as four of the ports’ 13 large grain terminals have suspended grain purchases.
